Health and Life Skills Programs

 Health & Lifeskill

Health & Life Skill programs encourage young people to engage in positive behaviors that nurture their own well-being and set personal goals for the future. Through key partnerships and full-time staff, members participate in programs that reinforce healthy living such as SMART Moves, a drug, alcohol, and tobacco prevention program, gender-specific programming, pregnancy prevention programs, and diversity education. Special events that include screenings, health presentations, and financial literacy conferences are another key component of this program area.

SMART Moves Program (Skills Mastery And Resistance Training): This nationally-acclaimed comprehensive prevention program helps young people resist alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, as well as premature sexual activity. SMART Moves features engaging, interactive small group activities designed to increase participants' peer support, enhance life skills, build resiliency and strengthen leadership skills. The program's components include:

  • SMART Kids, for children ages 6-9

  • Start SMART, for youth ages 10-13

  • Stay SMART, for youth ages 14-18

All modules of this program address age-appropriate issues to help youth make wise choices, adopt healthy lifestyle behaviors and develop positive character traits.

Smart-Girl: This 60-hour, activity-based program supports and inspires girls, ages 11-13, to make smart choices and become confident, capable and self-reliant women.
